Top Kitchen Design Trends 2024: Embrace Porcelain and More

31/07/2024

Kitchen design was yet again the focus at this year’s Salone del Mobile in Milan, thanks to its biennial Eurocucina exhibition which gives us an unrivalled glimpse into the design, materials, colours and textures we will be seeing in our kitchen spaces over the next few years.

Maybe you’re thinking about how renovating your kitchen could elevate your entire home or maybe you’re embarking on the exciting journey of designing the ideal kitchen of your dreams?

We’ve put together a quick glimpse into a variety of kitchen designs and styles tailored for the Australian lifestyle, to help you kickstart your planning. From layouts and colour schemes to the newest designs and innovative surfaces, discover the trends that are shaping modern kitchens, both present and emerging.

INSPIRATION

Nature is a constant and never-ending source of inspiration, especially in kitchen design. Embracing our Australian influence and connectedness to nature, incorporate materials like stone, marble, travertine, and limestone into your kitchen countertops. The colours and surfaces range from warm neutrals to rich, deeper earth tones, complemented by decorative elements such as live plants, bamboo, and leaf motifs. Biophilic design will take centre stage, and you can easily leverage this to transform your kitchen into a harmonious, nature-inspired space.

COLOUR

The pure white – almost sterile – kitchen of the past decade is being replaced by nurturing, calming spaces that feature layers of texture, colour and in some cases, pattern. Warm whites, such as ecru, parchment and stone, alongside rich earthy hues such as sand, terracotta, clay and ochre.  The idea is to layer a few colours, along with a mix of materials.

Porcelain benchtops for example, add both beauty and durability to your home. Kitchen countertops play a pivotal role in these transformations, by creating a subtle yet visually interesting look. These colour schemes are perfect for creating a contemporary, nature-connected kitchen.

MATERIALS

Materiality is key when planning your next build or renovation project. You can draw inspiration from materials like porcelains that replicate natural marbles, limestone, granite, and travertine. Brushed and burnished metals, timbers crafted, shaped, and slatted in mid to deep tones, and tiles and wall treatments that are patterned or etched. Natural textiles such as cotton, wool, jute, and hemp in earthy tones add texture and tactility. Reeded or fluted glass can also serve as a stunning addition.

FORM

The blurring of the line between kitchen and living space has gained even more traction – seamless integration with other living spaces will be enhanced by virtue of utilitarian kitchen cabinetry being designed to look more like furniture.  Pocket doors and creative cabinetry will conceal the bulkier kitchen appliances from view.  Surface materials will be selected for their ability to be used throughout connecting spaces – Porcelain, for example, can be used in kitchen, bathroom, laundry, living spaces and even outdoor kitchens.

ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS

At this year’s show, one word dominated the conversation across surfaces, materials, and appliances: SUSTAINABILITY. Consumers are more eco-conscious than ever, embracing the concept of Conscious Consumption. They want to ensure products are sourced and produced sustainably. In your kitchen renovations, from benchtops to appliances, style will now go hand in hand with ethical and sustainable practices. Draw inspiration from this trend to create your ideal space, where beauty and responsibility coexist seamlessly.
