The Move to Safer, Crystalline Silica-Free Surfaces
Caesarstone
With many headlines circulating in the media over the last 12 months about the health risks associated with exposure to respirable crystalline silica dust and growing speculation about safe countertop materials, we’re here to unpack it and give it to you straight. There’s been a lot of confusion, and understandably so. When a material as common as engineered stone is suddenly making news, people start asking questions.
So, what’s actually going on? Is your kitchen benchtop safe? And what does this mean for the future of surfaces in Australia? Let’s break it down.
Silica itself isn’t the problem and poses no risk to human health in its solid form, it’s the processing of the naturally occurring mineral found in materials like concrete, quartz and stone. On its own, it’s stable and safe. The real issue starts when these materials are cut, drilled, or polished, releasing tiny airborne particles known as respirable crystalline silica (RCS).
Unlike regular dust, crystalline silica dust particles can travel deep into the lungs, where they become trapped, impossible for the body to break down. Over time, prolonged exposure can seriously affect your respiratory health, leading to notable diseases such as silicosis, a permanent and incurable lung condition. According to Safe Work Australia, other risks include lung cancer, COPD, chronic bronchitis and kidney disease.
While safety regulations have been in place for years, alarming spikes in silicosis cases, particularly among stonemasons and construction workers, have led to stronger action from governments and industry leaders.
Recognising the growing health crisis, Australia has banned engineered stone containing 1 percent or more crystalline silica from July 1, 2024. This move is about protecting workers who have prolonged exposure to respirable crystalline silica dust.
The ban follows mounting evidence, of occupational lung disease from health professionals and industry bodies. It’s a bold step, but deemed necessary to protect the health of workers exposed. The goal? To prevent further cases of occupational lung disease and to push the industry toward safer and more sustainable alternatives.
By understanding the real issues and what’s being done to fix them, you can make more informed choices about the materials you choose to place in your home, without sacrificing style or safety. It’s all about finding durable, sustainable surfaces that look amazing and support long-term health.
Caesarstone understood the risks long before the ban came into effect. Instead of waiting for regulations to catch up, we took the lead. Caesarstone continues to pioneer the Crystalline Silica-Free revolution, driving the industry toward safer, smarter surfaces.
This wasn’t just about meeting new standards; it was about pushing boundaries. We reimagined what engineered surfaces could be and developed the next generation of Mineral Crystalline Silica-Free surfaces to protect workers, give homeowners peace of mind and create a better future for the industry.
We didn’t rush the process. Every detail, from the raw materials to the final finish, was meticulously refined. By blending natural minerals with recycled materials like glass, we built a surface that delivers everything Caesarstone is known for: strength, durability, sustainability and timeless design, without the concerns and impact to workers’ health.
The shift from low-silica formulations to Crystalline Silica-Free materials is already happening. Most of our popular colours and designs are now available in this safer blend so you can choose with confidence, without compromising on aesthetics or performance.
Our commitment to innovation doesn’t stop there. Our Porcelain collection has always been ahead of the curve, offering a premium, high-performance surface. Unlike traditional engineered stone, Caesarstone Porcelain is unaffected by the silica ban, providing a perfect alternative choice for surfaces in both residential and commercial spaces.
Designed for seamless indoor-outdoor integration, incorporating a porcelain benchtop combines elegance with extreme durability. Whether you’re designing a sleek, modern kitchen or a luxurious outdoor entertaining space, these surfaces are built to withstand heat, UV exposure, stains and scratches, without sacrificing beauty.
With Caesarstone in millions of homes worldwide, we hold ourselves to the highest standards of hygiene, durability, and sustainability. Our commitment goes beyond materials; we’re working alongside manufacturers, stonemasons and regulators to ensure a safer, more sustainable future for the entire industry.
At the heart of this effort is education and training. Over 1,726 stonemasons in Australia (and more than 4,000 worldwide) have completed our Master of Stone® (MOS) online training university program, an industry-leading training initiative designed to ensure safe processing and installation techniques are provided free for all industry workers. The program is backed by industry experts and recognised by state regulators as a critical step toward improving safety across the trade.
For professionals, designers and builders, staying informed is just as important as choosing the right materials. Our Caesarstone Design and Installation Guides provide up-to-date expert information on all aspects of design, safe processing, handling and installation, so the entire process from start to finish can be risk free. By working together, we’re shaping an industry where safety, quality and design go hand in hand.
The conversation around crystalline silica-free benchtops has changed the industry for the better. When safety is no longer a concern, you have the freedom to focus on designing for what really matters. Whether you’re planning a modern kitchen, a statement bathroom, or a seamless indoor-outdoor space, you can move forward with confidence, knowing your surfaces are built for both beauty and long-term well-being.
