The Heart of the Home

__________

The kitchen in our opinion is the heart of the home. It’s where Kingi cooks (yes that’s right, I’m not the cook!) and I clean up as he makes all the mess and discuss our days as a family. We knew we wanted the kitchen to be open and faced towards the living area so our whole family can be in the one area the same time and we can keep an eye on our 4 year old!

"When tackling a massive renovation we always recommend start in your kitchen. Plan and design the kitchen first and the rest of the house will flow from it. Once you have this sorted you know your colour palette and can always refer back to it if you get overwhelmed down the track."

Trust Your Instincts

You would have most likely heard that "Black is the new White" when it comes to kitchens so I think we are definitely "on-trend”.

So many people have given us their (not asked) opinion on our Black kitchen during the planning process. I have to admit we did have A LOT of discussions regarding the colour and how hard it’s going to be to keep clean!! Little hands make many marks and there’s a lot of Mum’s out there that will agree with me! But Kingi was adamant we were having this Black kitchen right or wrong.

I knew deep down I wasn’t winning this one so I went with it and trusted him. That’s just what you have to do when your married is compromise! He picked the cabinetry and I went to work with the rest of the colours. I had to lighten it up and try and make it look not so dark and closed in which is what I was afraid of. We went with Caesarstone for our bench tops in a colour called Statuario Maximus™ and Oak timber handles to warm up the space and really complement the black cabinetry.

Colour Selections

Kingi has knocked it out of the park with his signature Marrakesh render he applied over the island bench and with our ‘laminate’ floor boards running up the front of the island bench really warms up the entire entrance of the home and suits our Industrial design. With having such raw material as the render, we love that we decided to go with the Statuario Maximus™ colour as both materials really complement each other and bring out the beautiful vain that the Statuario Maximus™ has. We loved this stone so much we used it in our Master Ensuite, Laundry and Bar area! All our guest just love to touch it and always complement us on its stunning colour.

Be prepared for change

There were definitely some areas of this kitchen that we changed in the spare of the moment and I think that’s the best way to approach renovations.

"You have to be open to change and accept sometimes things don’t always go to plan, which messes with my OCD but you just have to roll with it as there’s no point in stressing about things you can’t change. Lesson 1 learnt on The Block!"

When we originally designed this Kitchen our measurements weren’t exact (surprise surprise), and it didn’t help that we hadn’t built the new external wall yet so exact measurements were taken later down the track to ensure it would work in the space we had created. We stepped out the whole kitchen with tape and we realized our Island bench was going to be too big.

Again you have to map out your designs and make sure they work in your home. If we didn’t do this we would have lost a lot of space, time and money! So after cutting about 700mm off the island bench we are so pleased we made this call early in the planning stage. The Matte Black cabinetry looks timeless especially with the slim line oak handles which I found online (another time saver). Do your research in the early planning stages and don’t be afraid to buy online. We saved a lot in our renovations buy doing our homework and purchasing from online stores.

We brought our sink from the Renovator Store and had it under mounted as we wanted the sink to be invisible. The stone is cut to fit the dimensions of our sink and one of the most seamless finishes you can have. We also chose to have flutes cut into the stone to allow water to drain into the sink for those big pots and pans that don’t fit into your dishwasher, definitely a big tick for our busy family!

Consistency is Key

We chose to use the Statuario Maximus™ stone throughout our whole home to make sure we had a consistent design and it flowed from room to room. We really made sure that we maximised our slab and made sure we had none spare! Why would you waste any of this beautiful material! We are over the moon with how our whole renovation has turned out and are finally happy to call this house our forever home.
